PORTLAND, OR — Spot-market freight volume dropped 3.4% in April, compared to March, but fell 30% year-over-year, according to the DAT North American Freight Index.
Year-over-year declines have been following a consistent pattern in every month since January 2015, due to lower demand for transportation services in the spot market, as well as readily available truck capacity, DAT Solutions announced Tuesday.
Spot truckload freight availability in April fell 8.9% for dry vans, while volume for reefer vans slipped 9.4%. Flatbed volume spiked 3.9%, and line-haul rates on the cash market dropped 1.5% for vans, and 0.6% for reefers; flatbed rates increased 1.2% month-over-month.
Demand declined 38% for vans, 34% for reefer trailers, and 22% for flatbeds, year-over-year. Line-haul rates fell 16% for vans, 12% for reefers, and just 8% for flatbeds in April, compared to same-month levels in 2015.
