Peter Shumlin's administration says staff will look at a plan to levy hefty fines against tractor-trailer drivers who unlawfully try to take a northern Vermont road known for ensnaring large trucks.

The Burlington Free Press reports (http://bfpne.ws/1OMcS41 ) state traffic officials hope steep fines, new signage and public outreach will help prevent tractor-trailers from becoming stuck in Smugglers Notch, about 20 miles east of Burlington.
New legislation expected to take effect in July would fine truck drivers $1,000 for using state Route 108, or $2,000 if the incident impedes traffic flow. Those fines would double for subsequent violations.
Officials with the state Department of Motor Vehicles say law enforcement officers previously have only been able to ticket drivers $162 for not obeying traffic control devices.
