WASHINGTON, DC – The role of tires in vehicle safety is receiving some added attention this week, as the Rubber Manufacturers Association recognizes Tire Safety Week from May 29 to June 4. And only days after that public awareness campaign comes to an end, tires will be a key focus during the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s Roadcheck inspection blitz from June 7 to 9.
“The importance of proper tire maintenance, regular inspection, and correct inflation can’t be overstated when it comes to safe and efficient commercial vehicle operation,” said Jon Intagliata, Bendix’s product manager for Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems. “Tire pressure and upkeep have a direct impact on the performance and longevity of tires themselves, and further-reaching effects in terms of fuel savings and fleet operating costs.”
Tires underinflated by as little as 10% can reduce fuel economy by 1.5%, while a 20% drop in pressure can reduce tire life by 30%, according to the Technology and Maintenance Council of the American Trucking Associations. Bendix says these challenges can be tackled with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System.
The company also notes that 90% of blowouts are caused by underinflated tires, which increase stress and temperatures alike.
