According to ACT Research Inc., used Class 8 truck metrics continued to be mixed in March, showing volumes that were up 8 percent month over month.
This continues a significant recovery last month from January’s low, according to Steve Tam, ACT’s vice president of the commercial vehicle sector. “However,” Tam said, “this translates to a 5 percent year to date contraction compared to the first three months of 2015. Dealers continue to report falling used truck values and they believe prices will continue to fall for some time.”
Used truck inventories are growing at both the OEM and dealer level, with an over-supply of late model aerodynamic fleet spec’d sleepers.
“Average mileage of used Class 8 trucks in March fell 3 percent month over month — a second consecutive month of improvement for this measure,” Tam said.
“The average age of Class 8 used trucks sold in March remained flat month over month, while prices trended up month over month in all three market segments, with retail and auction segments faring the best; prices remain lower on a year over year basis.”
