CHARLESTON, S.C. — Charleston City Council is proposing a combination of tolls and taxes to pay for finishing Interstate 526 through Charleston's western suburbs.
Local media outlets report that the council voted 11-2 Tuesday to ask the state infrastructure bank to give the city and Charleston County until the end of the year to develop a plan to cover the shortfall for completing the highway.
The infrastructure bank has set aside $420 million for the project but the work is now expected to cost $725 million.
The city is asking the infrastructure bank board to give the city and county until Dec. 31 to explore raising half of the needed money through a sales tax increase while the other half would be paid for by tolls on the road.
