GATS: EARNING A HEALTHY REPUTATION

Driver health and wellness continues to grab top billing at the Great American Trucking Show, coming up soon. The three-day event in Dallas, Texas, will create a place for drivers to annually receive free screenings, health care education and more. GATS will be held at the Kay Bailey Hutchinson Convention Center Aug. 25-27.

The Landstar Fit for the Road Health and Wellness Pavilion will provide free health screenings, cooking, fitness and educational demos. The pavilion promises to be bigger and better with some new additions. DOT certified examiners will be available on all three days of the show to perform exams for $59.
Trucking Solutions Group – a get-it-done group of trucking professionals – is involved in a bone marrow donor registration drive, is planning a blood drive at GATS and more.
Owner-operator and OOIDA Life Member Rick Ash, Lakewood, Colo., is chairman of TSG. He is also on the board of directors of the St. Christopher Fund. Ash says TSG is again bringing a mobile mammogram unit to GATS. Baylor Scott and White Health Care will be onsite in the pavilion for mammograms. The mammogram fundraising has been in gear for months, says Ash, the purpose being to make financial assistance available for those without insurance. Information on how to donate is available on the TSG website at TruckingSolutionsGroup.org.
At booth No. 22166 you can reserve a time slot for a mammogram, or you can pre-schedule by calling Baylor Scott & White at 214-820-3040.
The following health screenings and events will be available:
Third Annual Bone Marrow Donor Registration Drive
Ask a Pharmacist
Height, Weight, BMI, Blood Pressure screening
Chiropractic Assessments
Diabetes Education
Eye Acuity and Color Blindness Testing
Kidney Function Analysis
Mammogram Breast Cancer Screenings

Also being added this year are sleep apnea screenings with medical consultation being provided by John McElligott, M.D., Knoxville, Tenn. McElligott is the medical advisor to the St. Christopher Fund and host of the St. Christopher Fund Minute on SiriusXM and also a frequent guest on Land Line Now, both on 146 Road Dog Channel. “Dr. John” is a regular contributing columnist for Land Line Magazine.
A food vendor will be offering healthy alternatives, and a multitude of other vendors will offer health and wellness products and services.
To further the focus on driver health, GATS is planning a variety of educational seminars and healthy-cooking demonstrations on the stage in the health pavilion.
There’s more. GATS will host a Fit for the Road 5K Charity Run/Walk, sponsored by Right Weigh Load Scales, to help promote a healthy lifestyle for truckers and a healthy cause. Discounted online registration will be available prior to the morning of the event, with the proceeds going to the St. Christopher Truckers Development and Relief Fund. Included with your registration, participants will receive a packet which includes a GATS Fit for the Road 5K Run/Walk T-shirt and more.
The run/walk takes place Saturday, Aug. 27, at 7 a.m. at area allotted for the GATS TA & Petro Community, spread across more than 36 acres at the Cotton Bowl’s Fair Park. Check in at the GATS Community Tailgate at Fair Park at 6:30 a.m. Free round-trip shuttle service will be provided from the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center at 6 a.m.
Along with the health and wellness pavilion, the show is a convention for truckers that offers educational sessions, the Pride and Polish Truck Beauty Competition National Championship, and more. The show is produced by Randall-Reilly, who says more than 500 exhibitors representing truck, trailer, component and parts manufacturers will be there. For more about the show, go to truckshow.com.
At Fair Park, there’s free truck, car and RV parking (no hook-ups), regular shuttles to and from the convention center, food vendors, showers, and portable restrooms provided by TA & Petro. Along with the Fit for the Road 5K, there’s a worship service on Sunday.
