“Although commercial trailer orders have been progressing at a better pace than Class 8 volumes, the expected seasonal slowdown in order placement has begun,” said Frank Maly, ACT’s director of commercial vehicle transportation analysis and research.

“Historical patterns would show a slower May comes from a combination of softer gross orders along with some mid-year adjustments to orders previously booked with OEMs,” Maly said.
He added, “A slower overall economy has resulted in lower freight demand. That, along with a continual reassessment of equipment needs by fleets, also impacts market condition.” These preliminary results point to net orders down roughly 16 percent from April and down almost 12 percent from the same month last year.
This information has been developed using a new methodology that should allow ACT to generate an estimate for total U.S. net trailer orders that will be within a plus or minus 5 percent of the final order number. For perspective, last month, the first month this new methodology was publicized, the preliminary estimate was within 1.5 percent of the final report.
ACT is the recognized leading publisher of new and used commercial vehicle industry data, market analysis and forecasting services for the North American market, as well as the China commercial vehicle market.
