The Transition Trucking award program — created by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Hiring Our Heroes Program, Kenworth and Fastport — is intent on curbing the trucking industry’s driver shortage and creating immediate jobs for transitioning military personnel.
The Transition Trucking: Driving for Excellence Award will recognize a deserving veteran, guard member or reservist who has made a successful transition from military service into the trucking industry as a professional truck driver.
The winner of the Transition Trucking Award will receive the keys to a 2016 Kenworth T680 commercial truck — valued at $170,000 — to help accelerate their career in the trucking industry. The truck will be on display at Hiring Our Heroes events across the nation during the summer and fall.
Truck drivers are a critical component of the U.S. economy. In 2013, the trucking industry hauled nearly 70 percent of all U.S. freight, yet there is a major shortage of commercial drivers, with more than 100,000 driver openings expected in the near future.
The competition is open to all veteran, National Guard and reservist truck drivers who have been hired by a veteran-friendly trucking company since Jan. 1, 2015.
Nominations are accepted at www.TransitionTrucking.org until June 30, when 10 finalists will be selected. A public vote will be taken beginning Sept. 11, and the winner and runner-ups will be announced in December.
