A North Carolina trucker was struck and killed in a hit-and-run Tuesday, May 31, along Interstate 85 in Jackson County, Ga., according to a Georgia Department of Public Safety crash report. Law enforcement is still looking for the driver who struck the man.
At approximately 2:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, Aleksandr Shabunko, 57, of Asheville, N.C., was hit by a box truck while parked along southbound I-85 near mile marker 140. Shabunko had parked his truck on the right shoulder and was standing near the left third axle when the box truck struck him.
The police report reveals that Shabunko’s truck had its hazard lights on when troopers arrived at the scene. State troopers also found a cracked mirror near the fifth wheel of the man’s truck.
A witness traveling on southbound I-85 at the time claims she saw a box truck traveling in the right lane swerve and hit whatever what is in the roadway, according to the crash report. The driver of the box car stopped, exited the vehicle, and then fled the scene.
The witness described the driver of the box car as a white male with a beard and possibly in his 40s. She described the truck as a white box truck with a green frame on the side of the cargo compartment with some red design on the inside of the frame. The words “Food Services” were said to be on the side of the truck.
