The deadline to nominate a military veteran for the Transition Trucking Driving for Excellence Award is winding down.
June 30 is the final day drivers can be nominated for the award, which includes a 2016 Kenworth T680 tractor with 76-inch mid-roof sleeper as the grand prize.
The program, which was first announced in April at the Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, Ky., is part of an effort to create immediate jobs for transitioning military personnel.
“We’re going to really set that young driver off on their own entrepreneurial journey,” Hiring Our Heroes President Eric Eversole said at MATS. “It’s really a golden ticket for that young driver. There are no strings attached.”
To be eligible for the award, candidates must be a U.S. military veteran or currently serve in the National Guard or Reserve.
Other requirements include:
Graduating from either a school certified by Professional Truck Driver Institute (PTDI) or National Association of Publicly Funded Truck Driving Schools or Commercial Vehicle Training Association (CVTA) member driver training school and have a valid CDL;
Being employed by a trucking company that has made a hiring commitment and pledge to hire veterans through the Trucking Track Mentoring Program; and
Being first hired in a trucking position between Jan. 1, 2015, and June 29, 2016.
The 10 finalists will be notified on July 22 before being recognized Aug. 26 at the Great American Show in Dallas. There, finalists are slated to receive prize packs, to be interviewed by Hiring American, and to create a video profile.

From the video profile, the public will vote for their favorite finalist at HiringAmerica.net. Voting to narrow the field down to three is scheduled to end Nov. 11. Judges will then pick a winner, who will be presented the award on Dec. 16 at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.
In addition to the new tractor, the winner will receive a round-trip airline ticket to Washington, D.C., for the award presentation, two nights’ stay at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City in Arlington, Va., and $250 in cash to cover other expenses.
The two runners-up will receive $10,000 in prize money, as well as the trip to Washington, D.C.
