Two people were killed during a shooting spree along an Oklahoma highway in the early hours of Thursday, Dec. 17.
Dispatchers first received calls about 11:53 p.m. Wednesday in regards to a “road rage” incident on Interstate 40 in Canadian County, Okla. Soon after, dispatchers received reports of gunfire.
The incident continued into Custer County, Okla. At 12:39 a.m., Jeremy Doss Hardy, 36, reportedly pulled his vehicle onto the shoulder of the highway. He was subsequently arrested for driving under the influence and was taken into custody of the Custer County Jail.
Custer County Sheriff Bruce Peoples said no charges had been filed in the shooting as of Thursday morning.
Two drivers, 45-year-old Jeffrey Kent Powell and 63-year-old Billie Jean West, were killed in the incident, according to reports.
Peoples said he was unsure how many vehicles were shot during the incident, but he did mention that several of the vehicles struck were tractor-trailers.
“He fired shots at everything from commercial trucks, small compact cars, SUVs and vans,” Peoples said. “So it was just a senseless act of assault and violence and road rage going down the road. There was no specific connection to what type of vehicle. He shot literally everything that he went by.”
